I finally saw my first Tesla Roadster this weekend, and it just reminded me of how bad I've wanted to drive one ever since I first heard about it. I'm hoping that they restart production on these soon (and make them a little bit more affordable) now that they've announced they're upgrading the battery packs and are on their way to establish more facilities for increased production.
Has anyone here driven or ridden in one of these? Is it as cool as I'm imagining it would be?

My understanding was that they had no intentions of going back to the roadster. They originally created the roadster as a way to make money selling obscenely-priced cars. Then, once they had enough of a grasp on the technology, they switched to a luxury sedan; a market segment where you can get away with moderately overpricing your cars. Now that they've done well with that for a while, and really have their act figured out, they're moving on to the 'regular people' class of cars with their next couple models. They might go back to making sports cars again someday, but I don't think it's in the current plan.
That having been said, I've been drooling over the Tesla Roadster since it was first announced. Although since it's basically just a modified Lotus Elise, I'm sure I could have as much fun just renting one of those for a day.

Yeah, I know it's not currently in the plans, but it's no secret that Tesla has been pretty successful, even with all the legal bullshit that makes sales in some states much harder. Like you said, they've been able to start moving to other markets, so in several years, they might be in a position to start producing multiple different models, and thus resurrecting the Roadster, or at least making another sports car.
That's what I hope, anyway...

They're even cooler when you pay less and get an engine thrown in...

I have driven a couple (when I was valet parking in college.) I don't know if you've driven a lotus Elise or Exige, but it's basically the same experience, just less noisy. I didn't have a chance to to really stand on it, so I can't really comment on the speed or acceleration, but I'd bet the torque is addicting. I've driven a lot of Exiges and Elises in all states of modification from stock to pretty radical, but the electric power definitely has a different, more immediate feel.
Honestly, as cool as it is, I'd rather have a regular Elise or Exige: Not only are they cheaper, but then I can shift my own gears as well. Plus no battery failing over time to worry about, though I think I read somewhere that Tesla is updating all the Roadster's batteries anyway.

Yeah, it's that torque that I really want to experience, some people here have driven the Model S and mentioned that it's really crazy to experience.
Honestly, I'd probably rather have an Exige also, but I like the idea of an all electric sports car, it just seems cool in it's own right.

Yeah I hear that. I've not had the chance to drive a Model S, but I too am yearning to feel the torque.
